ABB Lays Off 69

Hourly Positions Terminated Across All Product Lines

A total of 69 hourly positions were eliminated Thursday affecting ABB employees on all three shifts and reaching across all of the product lines at the South Boston plant, local plant officials confirmed Thursday morning.
According to Milton Axton, ABB vice-president and general manager, the affected employees were told Wednesday that their jobs would be eliminated effective Thursday.
After the layoffs, ABB has a remaining workforce of approximately 500, according to plant officials.
The job eliminations are the company’s reaction to the general recession affecting businesses and industries across the nation.
“We have seen a significant fall off in our orders,” Axton said. “We have seen a tremendous decline for transformers that has resulted in cancellation of investment projects.”

Celebrate July 4th In Scottsburg

Scottsburg is preparing to welcome throngs of people to its fair town for the annual Fourth of July celebration Saturday.
Members of the Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department have been burning the midnight oil to get the grounds as well as the building ready for a crowd of thousands this weekend, according to Ricky Gordon, event chairman.
“My favorite part of getting ready is the placing of the American flags on the light poles. You can’t help feeling proud to be an American when you look at them waving in the breeze,” Gordon said.
“A lot is in store for the ones coming out this weekend. Good music, good food and a good time with no cost to you except what you spend on food or drinks,” he added.

Supes Hike Fees To Fund Courthouse Repairs

Impose New Court Filing Fee; Double Law Library Fee

A new court filing fee and a hike in the law library fee will help fund improvements and renovations to the deteriorating historic Halifax County Courthouse, supervisors decided Tuesday night when they met briefly in a special called meeting.
During the meeting that only lasted about 10 minutes, supervisors approved an amended ordinance to allow the county to collect higher fees from court cases filed in the Halifax County Courthouse.
The extra funds will be used to renovate and restore the historic courthouse, which is plagued with extensive mold and water damage both to its interior and exterior.
Supervisors had to have a special called meeting Tuesday to meet the deadline for submitting the change to the Virginia Supreme Court by July 1.
Thanks to the amended ordinance, the county now will be permitted to collect an extra $21,000 in projected court fees with an estimated $9,000 coming from increasing the law library fees and the other estimated $12,000 coming from the imposition of a new security fee.
