A crowd estimated at more than 13,000 celebrated Independence Day in grand style Friday at Scottsburg’s annual July 4th celebration.
The day began with a parade at 10 a.m. and concluded with a street dance in the evening, with music, and the usual list of activities consuming the afternoon hours.
The Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department grossed approximately $19,000 during the event, according to spokesman Wayne Seamster.
“It was a great day despite the economy, and we were real pleased with both the turnout and the number of donations,” he noted.
“Without donations, we would probably not be able to do this every year.”
In that vein, Scottsburg resident Amy Throckmorton, winner of the $1,000 cash giveaway first-place prize, donated half her winnings to the fire department, said Seamster.
Scottsburg’s Fourth of July celebrations are characterized by hot and sticky weather and this year was no exception, with 600 cups of lemonade, 30 gallons of tea and 160 cases of soft drinks consumed by thirsty celebrants, he continued.
Fire department volunteers sold 100 gallons of stew, 125 pounds of chicken, 200 pounds of hamburger, 350 pounds of barbeque and 24 cases of French fries, with the crowd staying steady throughout the day, added Seamster.
