Tragedy was avoided Tuesday morning when a 1995 Kenworth logging truck owned by Kevin M. Pearce of Zebulon, N.C., and driven by William Crudup, 51, Bunn, N.C., was traveling eastbound, lost its brakes and struck the rear of a 2008 International bucket truck owned by VDOT on the temporary bridge over the Banister River in the Town of Halifax, according to Trooper T.C. Comer.

The arm of the bucket truck was extended over the side of the bridge, and two VDOT employees were in the bucket inspecting the underside of the bridge when the crash occurred at 11:30 a.m., Comer said.

The two men were unhurt, and damages were estimated at $15,000 to the Kenworth and $4,000 to the International. Comer charged Crudup with having defective brakes and tires.
