Often we have written in this column about our sister city publication in South Boston, Massachusetts. We received a nice note this week from Betty Rogers Vaughan Nelson of Virgilina who traveled to that fair city some 55 years ago as Miss South Boston, Va.  In her official capacity, she helped the South Boston sister city celebrate its annual Evacuation Day and St. Patrick’s Day celebration March 15-17, 1955.

The Biggest Loser

Halifax County is turning out to be one of the biggest losers under the governor’s proposal to unfreeze the Local Composite Index (LCI)  resulting in a loss of nearly $1.5 million to our local schools at a time when the system is facing a whopping $7.2 million budget deficit due to this action and other state cuts.

 
Help Our Wounded Warriors

The nation’s largest veterans organization is calling on fellow Americans to spend a few moments every day between now and the end of the month to help our wounded service men and women.
